Structured CPD Points for IVPD Business and Financial Congresses and Workshops – are we still in the dark ages and out of touch with the rest of the world?

The SAVC is lagging behind the rest of the world (USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, to name a few) in recognising the importance, especially in these tough economic times, of running a veterinary practice according to sound business principles. Your Institute has, since 2008, brought new and innovative thinking to both IVPD members and the veterinary industry as a whole by holding annual business and financial congresses and workshops run by highly regarded local and international presenters. Whilst it is recognised that offering medical expertise of the highest order to clients is vital, unless a practice is run using all the latest tools available to ensure maximum profitability, it will never reach its full financial potential and may indeed fail completely!
The SAVC has once again turned down the IVPD’s request for the granting of structured CPD points for business related Congresses and Workshops despite granting CPD points for attendance at business management lectures at the 2011 World Congress recently held in Cape Town.
This begs the question – why does the SAVC grant structured CPD points for other practice management presentations and yet resolutely refuses to acknowledge the contribution made by the IVPD to improve and grow practices in South Africa?
Their explanation that there are sufficient opportunities to gain CPD points already and therefore business related presentations need only be given unstructured points is a weak argument at best!
The IVPD will never give up their firm belief that business and financial presentations fully deserve to be recognised by the SAVC and calls for the support of the veterinary industry in South Africa to lobby the SAVC for structured CPD points for business and financial related congresses to enable the Institute to continue to introduce leaders in their field to present at their annual congresses and workshops.
